The ten teams in the final have five months to present their architectural proposals.

The ADIF Railway Infrastructure Manager has kicked off the final phase of the tender to award the project that will become the future Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station. This infrastructure is vital for the sustainable mobility for both the region of Madrid and Spain as a whole. The ten finalist teams, which include some of the most prestigious national and international architecture and engineering firms, now have five months to submit their proposals.

The institutional presentation of the finalists was held in the Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station itself and the presidents of ADIF and DCN gave speeches, and in attendence were the Urban Development delegate of the Madrid City Council and representatives of the selected teams.

María Luisa Domínguez, the president of ADIF and ADIF Alta Velocidad, stressed that the new railway complex, which will be completely renovated, is an opportunity to transform Madrid’s mobility, thanks to “an infrastructure that will be iconic for the city”. Domínguez emphasised that the new station will look beyond the users of the railway service and “will focus on its citizens”. ADIF’s president described the railway complex, whose final design will be determined in the tender, as “the station that we always wanted and that Madrid deserves”.

Railway and urban transformation, hand in hand

Álvaro Aresti, DCN’s president, said that the new infrastructure “will be much more than a state-of-the-art station, among the most advanced on the planet, and its function will transcend that of a mere railway”. In this sense, Aresti explained that the future Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station “is destined to become a determining factor for our city’s future, and the best reflection of what we want to be as a 21st-century society. A more sustainable, innovative and fairer society,” he added.

DCN’s president said that “the biggest urban transformation that our capital will experience in decades” will take place around the new station, referring to the Madrid Nuevo Norte urban regeneration project. A transformation that is going to change the city and that will be based on sustainable mobility, thanks to this rail infrastructure at the heart of the project.

Madrid Nuevo Norte’s urban design is based on the hyperconnected multimodal public transport network that will come from the new station and will take advantage of its immense potential accessibility to create a new sustainable city model around it.

In the words of Álvaro Aresti, this set of actions will make Chamartín “the city’s main mobility hub, with a unique capacity to efficiently and sustainably move thousands of people each day”, which will make it possible to create one of Europe’s main business districts next to the station. DCN’s president defined this business district as “an innovative space for the most advanced economic activities, which will make Madrid one of the most attractive cities on the continent, so that the best companies will want to set up here, attracting investment and talent and creating quality jobs”.

“The renovation of the Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station and Madrid Nuevo Norte are decisive projects for our future, and they will both be carried out in parallel over the coming years, giving an unprecedented boost to our city,” said Aresti. “The two actions complement each other and spring from the same principles: sustainability, innovation and the desire to improve people’s lives,” he added.
