Twenty thousand people have visited the Madrid Nuevo Norte exhibition

  • Project

Distrito Castellana Norte (DCN) opened in December the Madrid Nuevo Norte space, an interactive exhibition on the urban development project that will transform the capital

Feedback from the 20,000 people -both Madrid’s citizens and visitors- who have visited the exhibition has been extraordinary

Overall, visitors have rated Madrid Nuevo Norte with top marks, including housing, green spaces and new Chamartín train station

Madrid Nuevo Norte opened on December 19 to create awareness on this urban regeneration project set to transform Madrid. Since its opening, over 20,000 people have visited the premises located at 120 Castellana Avenue, an average of 465 people daily, with a peak of 900 visits on some Saturdays.

For DCN, this high influx reflects the massive support of Madrid’s citizens for Madrid Nuevo Norte, a project many years in the making that seeks to improve their neighbourhoods and quality of life.

The visitors, mostly from Madrid, but also from the rest of Spain and abroad, have had the opportunity to provide feedback and evaluate the various aspects of the project such as housing units, green spaces, cross-connections between neighbourhoods, Chamartín train station, public transportation, job creation, public facilities and services. All features received top marks, with encouraging comments about how important it is to implement Madrid Nuevo Norte quickly.

This exhibition is an unprecedented milestone in our country, as it marks a new way of engaging citizens in urban development. Never before have the details of a project of such magnitude been publicly displayed in Spain to citizens, making this a unique exercise of transparency, consistent with the values of the project and the company.

One of the elements most sought by the visitors to the exhibition is the 20-m2 city scale model of the project, an accurate reproduction that helps them visualise the completed project. Furthermore, they can immerse themselves in the future of Madrid thanks to VR headsets with 360º images. The headsets take the visitor to different places in Madrid Nuevo Norte, including the vast Central Park that will be built over the tracks at Chamartín train station, or the new housing units at Fuencarral.

Travel Sweepstakes

Most visitors leave their contact details to receive information relating to the project, as well as DCN’s bi-monthly newsletter, La Voz. They can also choose to enter the sweepstakes to win three trips to London, Berlin and Paris to find out more about their respective urban transformation projects.

An oft-repeated comment and feedback in our suggestion box focused on the timeline of administrative procedures and construction start date. Information requests on execution deadlines of housing and purchase procedures were also prevalent.

Madrid Nuevo Norte, which was initially approved by the Madrid City Council last September, is awaiting the provisional approval at the Municipal plenary session in February or March. The Regional Government of Madrid will then have to give its final approval.
