The Urban Development, Housing and Infrastructure Committee of Madrid City Council has today agreed to submit the provisional approval of Madrid Nuevo Norte to the plenary session to be held on Monday, 29 July. The unanimous decision was achieved with the votes in favour of People’s Party, Ciudadanos and Más Madrid. This completes the administrative procedure, clearing the way for the project. It is now up to the Government of Madrid to grant the final approval.
Mariano Fuentes, Madrid City Council Delegate for Urban Development, said that Madrid Nuevo Norte “is a project for all. It does not belong to any political party”. In this regard, he also stated that it is “incredible, that everyone, or almost everyone, is willing to support a project, a city project”. The delegate also elaborated that, in this new phase of the project, “a window of opportunity has opened”, for the city and all Madrid residents. “We are in the decision-making and legal liability stage,” he said.
The forthcoming provisional approval of Madrid Nuevo Norte at the City Council’s plenary session on the 29th signals the completion of the municipal processing phase of a project long awaited by the people of Madrid, made possible through the historical consensus reached between administrations, political parties and society.
Madrid Nuevo Norte will build 10,500 new housing units (20% of which will be affordable housing) and a business district, next to a renovated Chamartín train station, with more than one million m2 of state-of-the-art office spaces. This will decisively contribute to placing the Spanish capital at the forefront of Europe’s pioneering and sustainable cities, improving the quality of life of millions of people.
